Synthèse The Environmental Guidelines (EGL) for roads provide detailed analyses of environmental issues arising from road works along with mitigation measures that have been used successfully in national and international contexts. The guidelines identify the direct and indirect effects from road works on the biophysical environment—land, water, air, vegetation, etc.—as well as the socioeconomic and cultural environments—for instance, public health, welfare and safety and valued traditions from the present and past. In keeping with Kenya’s environmental law’s precepts, the guidelines underscore the importance of public consultations and participation in all aspects of road-transportation development, thereby ensuring accountability, fairness and sustainability.
