| Abstract |
A single intraperitoneal dose of 150µmol/kg 3,3',4,4'-tetrabromobiphenyl (3TBB) caused significant reduction in the growth rate of immature rats, pale enlarged livers and marked reduction in thymus size. Hepatocytes were enlarged and vacuolated. None of these effects were reversed by simultaneous administration of butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA) or butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT). Vitamin E reversed the growth inhibition. 150µmol/kg 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromobiphenyl (2TBB) had none of the above toxic effects. The presence of 3TBB in the polybrominated biphenyl mixture FireMaster BP-6 may significantly contribute to the toxicity of the latter. The correlation between this toxicity and aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase induction is confirmed. |
