(From the Permanent Representation of Italy to the IMO)
we would like to provide additional information regarding the abandonment of M/V Santa Cruz (IMO: 7615414), gathered by our Coast Guard Office in Genoa:
1. On 9th May, the ship’s Master, in his most recent statement, confirmed that provisions onboard are expected to last for approximately fifteen more days. He also expressed concerns about the behavior of some crew members, possibly due to uncertainty about their future employment.
2. The Federazione Nazionale Stella Maris (Apostolate of the Sea) in Genoa—a Catholic organization supporting seafarers, fishermen, and their families worldwide by providing technical, practical, and logistical assistance—continues to visit the Santa Cruz regularly in coordination with the Port Authority. They have reported that the situation onboard remains under control in terms of provisions and general conditions.
3. The shipowner, who holds both Slovenian and Italian nationality, has been onboard since the first reported issue in December 2024 and remains onboard.
4. Informal sources suggest that the shipowner is seeking an investor to take over operations and provide funding for the necessary inspections, aiming to resume business. Reports from colleagues in Genoa indicate promising developments toward a potential solution.
5. The vessel currently lacks MLC and Passenger Ship Safety certification due to major deficiencies found during inspections; however, it holds MLC insurance.
6. We also got information that the P&I club is informed about the case.
We remain available for any further clarification.
